Have you heard the demands for an income tax waiver for pensioners? I say, let us pay tax; it's a meager amount. The real topic isn't Income Tax, but the security and worry-free life of the common Bharatiya citizen.
I believe we should focus on far more pressing issues. Let's pay our taxes—it's a small contribution. We shouldn't squabble over this trivial amount, especially since we can't take our wealth with us. Instead, we must prioritise creating a 'sans-bribe-nation' where the common person isn't exploited and no individual is suppressed.
It's worth noting that while some argue for tax waivers, others rightly feel it's our duty to contribute to the country's development. Interestingly, countries like the United States have systems that have largely eliminated routine bribery, though high-level international deals may still face issues. However, we cannot compare our cultural values to those of European or American nations. As a Bharatiya, I love my country, and I believe every Bharatiya should too. Let us prioritise the fight against corruption, striving for a nation where everyone enjoys equal opportunities and is treated with dignity. By channeling our collective energy, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
In the USA, a common person can buy a home without paying bribes. They don't need to personally visit multiple government offices to get things done. By simply following the rules, one can obtain a driving license. People strictly adhere to traffic rules, never crossing the line or running a red signal, even when there's no traffic in sight. There is generally no discrimination in the workplace, and everyone is treated as equal.
Moreover, every person in the USA is generally treated with utmost respect everywhere, whether in shops, on public transportation, or while taking a stroll. This is largely because the population adheres to rules, loves their country, is patriotic, respects government guidelines, and is considerate of others. The police force is highly strict, prompt, unbiased, and impartial. (We must acknowledge that racism exists in every corner of the world, but it doesn't excuse widespread systemic corruption.)
As a patriotic citizen of Bharat, I try to adhere to the rules. I avoid confrontations and physical altercations, opting instead for legal recourse. But am I allowed to live peacefully in Bharat? Unfortunately, based on my experience, the answer is a resounding "no."
Influence and corruption are pervasive, and ordinary people are suppressed everywhere. I dread interacting with police officers, as my dignity is at risk in a police station. Even on a local bus, I'm at the mercy of the conductor's whims. When I purchased an independent home in Mysuru, I was forced to pay bribes to register the property in my name, then another bribe for obtaining a khata. The cycle of corruption seemed endless: a bribe for the transfer of the electric connection, and yet another for the water connection.
As I walk on the streets, I'm at the mercy of bike riders who routinely encroach on pedestrian paths. Even near my residential home, I'm forced to wait for over two minutes just to cross the lanes, highlighting the severe lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
Do I truly enjoy independence in this society? Observing the state of affairs in Bharat, I am compelled to wonder if I possess any self-dignity or self-respect. Instead, I'm plagued by constant worry, anxiously pondering what the future holds. Forty years of my life have been marred by apprehension, and now, at 56, I'm resigned to continue living in this state of unease. It's a bleak reality that I've grown accustomed to, but it's not the life I had envisioned. As I look back, I'm reminded that true freedom and peace remain elusive in a society plagued by corruption and inequality. And life, regrettably, goes on like that.

ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ನಾಗರಿಕನ ಅಸಹಾಯಕತೆ
ನಿವೃತ್ತಿವೇತನದಾರರಿಗೆ ಆದಾಯ ತೆರಿಗೆ ಮನ್ನಾ ಮಾಡುವ ಬೇಡಿಕೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೀರಾ? ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ನಾವು ತೆರಿಗೆ ಪಾವತಿಸೋಣ; ಅದು ಅತ್ಯಲ್ಪ ಮೊತ್ತ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಚರ್ಚೆಯ ನಿಜವಾದ ವಿಷಯ ಆದಾಯ ತೆರಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಿಗೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಭಾರತೀಯ ನಾಗರಿಕನ ಸುರಕ್ಷತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಚಿಂತೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಜೀವನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ.
ನಾವು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಒತ್ತಡದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಗಮನ ಹರಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ತೆರಿಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪಾವತಿಸೋಣ—ಇದು ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಕೊಡುಗೆ. ಈ ಅಲ್ಪ ಮೊತ್ತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾವು ಜಗಳವಾಡಬಾರದು, ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಸತ್ತಾಗ ಅದನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಬದಲಾಗಿ, ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಶೋಷಣೆಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗದ ಮತ್ತು ಯಾವುದೇ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ದಮನ ಮಾಡದ 'ಸಂಚಿ-ರಹಿತ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ' (ಸಂಚಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಲಂಚ/Bribe) ವನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಲು ನಾವು ಆದ್ಯತೆ ನೀಡಬೇಕು.
ಕೆಲವರು ತೆರಿಗೆ ಮನ್ನಾ ಅಗತ್ಯ ಎಂದು ವಾದಿಸಿದರೆ, ದೇಶದ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಕೊಡುಗೆ ನೀಡುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಇತರರು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿಯೇ ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ. ಕುತೂಹಲಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ, ಯುನೈಟೆಡ್ ಸ್ಟೇಟ್ಸ್ನಂತಹ ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗಳಿವೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಲಂಚವನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ನಿವಾರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ, ಆದರೂ ಉನ್ನತ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ವ್ಯವಹಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳು ಇನ್ನೂ ಇರಬಹುದು. ಹೇಗಾದರೂ, ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಯುರೋಪಿಯನ್ ಅಥವಾ ಅಮೆರಿಕನ್ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಬ್ಬ ಭಾರತೀಯನಾಗಿ, ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ದೇಶವನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಭಾರತೀಯನೂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನಾನು ನಂಬುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಾಚಾರದ ವಿರುದ್ಧದ ಹೋರಾಟಕ್ಕೆ ನಾವು ಆದ್ಯತೆ ನೀಡೋಣ, ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರೂ ಸಮಾನ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳನ್ನು ಆನಂದಿಸುವ ಮತ್ತು ಘನತೆಯಿಂದ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಶ್ರಮಿಸೋಣ. ನಮ್ಮ ಸಾಮೂಹಿಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕೇಂದ್ರೀಕರಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ, ನಮಗಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂದಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಉತ್ತಮ ಭವಿಷ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಬಹುದು.

ಈ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆಯೇ? ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿನ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿದಾಗ, ನಾನು ಯಾವುದೇ ಸ್ವಾಭಿಮಾನ ಅಥವಾ ಆತ್ಮಗೌರವವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆಯೇ ಎಂದು ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ಪಡುವಂತೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಬದಲಾಗಿ, ನಾನು ನಿರಂತರ ಚಿಂತೆಯಿಂದ ತೊಳಲಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ಭವಿಷ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಏನಾಗಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಆತಂಕದಿಂದ ಆಲೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ನನ್ನ ಜೀವನದ ನಲವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳು ಆತಂಕದಿಂದ ಕಳಂಕಿತವಾಗಿವೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಈಗ, 56 ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ನಾನು ಇದೇ ಅಸಹಜ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇದು ನಾನು ಒಗ್ಗಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಕಠಿಣ ವಾಸ್ತವ, ಆದರೆ ನಾನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಜೀವನ ಇದಲ್ಲ. ನಾನು ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡಿದಾಗ, ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಾಚಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಅಸಮಾನತೆಯಿಂದ ಪೀಡಿತ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಜವಾದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಂತಿ ದೂರ ಉಳಿದಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ನೆನಪಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಜೀವನ, ವಿಷಾದಕರವಾಗಿ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಸಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
