Home They Brought Her Warrior Dead
The great poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, who was born in England in 1802, was eccentric in nature. However, his poems deal with human psychology, focusing on love and affection. Although he died in 1892, his poems have earned him a high reputation that endures even today.
The poem I am going to explain now is one such emotional poem. The poet explores the mind pattern of a wife who faces the death of her warrior husband. She never utters a word and sheds no tears. Her mind is worried, and she is on the verge of deciding not to live anymore. However, tears well up when she looks at her innocent child, who needs to be brought up, and thus she decides to live.
PARA 1.
The lady was not visibly disturbed when her warrior husband was brought home dead. In fact, she was very upset and thought that living without her husband was pointless. The servants understood the lady's state of mind and wanted her to cry and not suppress her sufferings, lest it lead to catastrophe, or disaster, in her family.
PARA 2
Everyone praises the dead warrior, calling him soft, naive, and lovable, even his enemies. However, the lady maintains her silence and remains unmoved by the people's reactions.
PARA 3
In order to make the lady cry, one servant (maid) uncovers the cloth that had been placed over the dead husband. The maid thought that the lady would cry upon seeing the face of her deceased husband. Yet, the lady remains speechless.
PARA 4
Finally, the ninety-year-old woman brings the warrior's child and places it on the lady's knees. The lady bursts into tears and says that she must live for the sake of her child.
TO SUM UP
One should remember that birth and death are part of human life. While it is true that one feels the pain of the death of a loved one, it is equally important to remember the responsibility of caring for one's children, who need care, love, and affection from their parent. The instant poem is an excellent example that highlights this very aspect.
